Information on Pet Portraits

Commissioning a painting is an easy process and I am happy to talk with you regarding the process. Creating a painting knowing it is a gift for that someone special is a real privilege for me as an artist.

My portraits are handpainted over many hours, using reference photos to accurately capture the unique character of your treasured pet. It is very important to me to create a true likeness and capture the character within the fine detailing of the paintings. Your painting will be an everlasting tribute and unique artpiece to treasure for a lifetime.

5% of your commissioned pet portrait will be donated to HUHA, an animal shelter with a no-kill policy. HUHA actively works every day to find homes and foster care for a multitude of homeless, abandoned, seized and abused animals.

Oil Paintings

Oil Paintings are timeless pieces of art, and have a real vibrancy in colour. The beauty of paintings is you can touch it, feel the texture and not have to cover with glass.

I love painting on gessoboard because of the smooth surface, I feel I can get a higher level of detailing for this reason. Gessoboards will need to be framed. I import Ampersand Gessoboard from America. Ampersand Wood Panels are archival, acid-free and non-yellowing - they are specifically made for artistsl The final painting will be varnished for protection.

Charley pictured here with her 2 commissioned paintings of Rayz and Jiffy are an example of a box canvas with sides painted. A lightframe canvas can be framed, such as Millie (pictured at right) is painted on Gessoboard.

Prices vary according to size and medium.

Pastel Portraits

Pastel paintings have a beautiful soft look to them, although they will require framing behind glass to protect them. Full pastel paintings have background detailing and more time is taken over the finer detailing overall. I use a variety of soft pastels and pastel pencils to achieve the detail, on a Clairfontaine Pastelmat surface.

Oscar and Bleau were photographed by myself in Marlborough, which is always a joy to meet the animals in person before beginning a painting. Many photos were taken separately and together at their home, then a Photoshop mockup provided to the client to make up this composition. The final pastel painting is pictured top left, and was made up from two separate photographs.

"Mocha" is shown (top right) with a beautiful wooden frame, framed with museum glass to avoid any reflection.

Prices vary according to size of portraits.

Pastel Sketches

Pastel sketches are an affordable option to the full pastel paintings,
painted on Clairfontaine Pastelmat, with a plain background. There is a choice of 6 pastel paper colours.

Pastel Sketches are in a more of a looser "sketch style" and not as finely detailed overall as a full pastel painting, with minimal foreground (as per Bruiser the German Shorthaired Pointer, pictured top right). But as with full pastel paintiings, I always concentrate on the detailing around the eyes and face being the focal point and getting as much likeness to your pets as possible (see more on Monty the Springer Spaniel's portrait pictured left).

Available only as A4 and A3 sizes.
